Portraits of Criminals

2006

Portraits of Criminals is a series of drawings from the mugshots of several activists from The Civil Rights Movement, The Black Panthers Party, and The Black Muslims.  Inspired by early renderings such as John Singleton Copley, Head of a negro, (1777-78), the re-creation of these mug shots as fine art draws correlations between the representation of revered icons and the portraits of criminals. When the origin of the image becomes clear to the viewer from the revelation of the partialy erased mugshot identification label, discerning lawless from righteous becomes more complex.
